Description

The area around Germany's highest peak is characterized by several mountain ranges. The center of the region, Garmisch- Partenkirchen, is surrounded by three mountain ranges: south of the market town, the rugged Wetterstein massif with the well-known peaks of Zugspitze and Alpspitze rises into the air. The mountains are bordered to the vest and north by the Loisach, to the east by the Isar and Kranzbach and to the south by the Gaisbach. The Wetterstein is very excellent for walking, there are several cable cars that shorten the sometimes very steep ascents and numerous alpine club huts. However, some routes are reserved for experienced mountaineers due to the sometimes difficult terrain. To the north and vest of the market town are the Ammergau Alps, the Bavarian part of which is almost entirely designated as a nature reserve. In the north, this mountain range extends as far as the Alpine foothills, in the vest to the Tyrolean market town of Reutte. In the south and east, the Loisach river forms the border between Ehrwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberau. The mountains in the Ammergau Alps are significantly lower than in the neighboring Wetterstein. As most of the peaks can be reached on day hikes, there are only a few Alpine Club huts. There are only a few cable cars and chairlifts in the northern part of the mountain range, which is generally close to nature and hardly developed. To the east of Garmisch-Partenkirchen lies the Estergebirge, which stretches between the Loisach and Isar rivers. Only in the very south-west of the relatively small mountain range is there an ascent aid, the Wankbahn; the Weilheimer Hütte at the foot of the Krottenkopf is the only Alpine Club hut in the entire Estergebirge. South of the Wetterstein massif on Tyrolean territory, there is another mountain range that you can explore with this hiking book, the Mieminger Kette, which stretches between the Gaistal and Inntalentlang valleys. The eastern and western parts are particularly popular with hikers, while the central part is hardly accessible to hikers. Finally, the Karwendel mountains, which are popular with walkers, are also in the immediate vicinity of the Wetterstein massif, although only the westernmost edge is touched on in this book.

The 50 routes in this book cover a wide range from short walks to challenging full-day tours. You have between 50 and 2,500 meters of altitude to conquer. The walking times given are for guidance only and range from 1.5 hours to 11 hours. Compared to the Wetterstein massif, the Ammergau Alps can be described as an easier hiking area. Nevertheless, there are always steep and/or rocky sections in all the mountain ranges presented here. You should also expect exposed passages, some of which are secured by ropes, as well as easy via ferratas that lead up short sections over rocks or very steep terrain. Assess your physical and technical abilities correctly and test your limits on day hikes before your vacation.
<ui>
Compact and handy format (10.5 x 16 cm)

Protected spiral binding

Image description completely waterproof coated inside pages

Clear, easy-to-read maps

Optimal hiking scale 1:50.000 with UTM network

detailed depiction of the trail categories

waypoints link map and text

accurate route descriptions

precise information on places and sights

numerous town center and village maps

and and town maps

elevation profiles for each stage

comprehensive accommodation directory

thoroughly researched and constantly updated
</ui>
Esterbauer Verlag | 230 pages | 10,5 x 16 cm | spiral binding
