Description

The Ötztal extends over 65 km between Haiming and Obergurgl. Its side valleys - Horlachtal, Griestal, Windachtal and Venter Tal - are wonderful starting points for hikes of all levels of difficulty. The Geigenkamm separates the Ötztal from the Pitztal, which at 40 km is not quite as long as the Ötztal. It is crossed by the Pitztaler Ache river, which flows into the Inn in the Pitzeschlucht gorge. The end of the valley is formed by the Pitztal Glacier, at 3440 m the highest glacier in Tyrol, and the 3777 m high Wildspitze, Tyrol's highest and therefore much-visited peak. The Ötztal and Pitztal glaciers still exert a great fascination on people to this day. The Ötztal Trek, which leads in 22 stages and 400 km around the Ötztal valley, runs partly over the eternal ice, for those without glacier experience there are variants without glacier contact, but with equally fantastic experiences. Thanks to the alpine pastures, mountain inns and alpine refuges, attractive multi-day tours can be put together. The most spectacular huts include the Hochstubaihütte (3175 m), the Brunnkogelhaus (2738 m) and the Ramolhaus (3006 m). Hut cabs and the hiking bus to Windachtal make it easier to reach the alpine pastures and huts.
